Top five islands in the Stockholm archipelago

Among the 24 000 islands and islets, it is not easy to pick out the top five islands. This list is entirely subjective, but have something that speaks for itself, we think.

1. Sandhamn

It must not be a brat with chop concubine and dad's boat, some truths are universal: Sandhamn is unbeatable.

The surprisingly large village with its authentic island feel, the classic flying hotel with restaurant and bar, concassé which has been closed since the 1700s (it is said), the beautiful beaches away at Trouville, the great pine forest that is infinitely big, but so easy . Sandhamn offers so many gems that everyone can find something that attracts. With its sunny location far out in the outer archipelago of Sandhamn have the dramatic effect that you sometimes might not be in the protected inner parts of the Stockholm archipelago.

Perhaps the biggest difference between Sandhamn and many other islands in the Stockholm archipelago is availability. On Sandhamn, you will arrive. Certainly there are lots of fences around, but most of the island is public land and you can walk along the beach around the island. You can sit and enjoy on the rocks at either port or inlet on the south side of Sandhamn with views of the outer archipelago and the major shipping route into Stockholm.

Actually called the island of Sandon, and Sandhamn is the main town on the island.

2. Vaxholm

Well, Vaxholm is actually an island, the real name Vaxön, and Vaxholm is the main town on the island - you will begin to see the pattern? Vaxholm is also the main town in the Stockholm archipelago, you could say. The island is located just an hour's boat ride from Stockholm with jetty boats. Vaxholm is a vibrant small town in the summer with cafes, restaurants, shops and a good marina. On the surrounding islands are fortresses that played a major role in the defense of Stockholm during the centuries, including the Vaxholm fortress that lies just a stone's throw from the village and can be visited after a short boat ride.

Vaxholm Hotel is a traditional venue for fine accommodations and good food. To sit and eat in the hotel dining room with stunning views over the bay outside is a great experience, whether it be three-course dinner, Christmas dinner or breakfast.

The city with its beautiful wooden invites to long walks, and there are several cafes appreciated if you want to rest your legs for a while.

3rd Möja

Möja is a large island on the outskirts of the central inner archipelago (if you have to be careful). The island has several resorts, or rather bridges: Möja Power, Berg, Loka, Ramsmora, Långvik. They are connected by a road along the island's eastern side, suitable for cycling and walking - it is impossible to get lost.

The Mountain is a café, restaurant, snack bar, Konsum Business and a very popular marina in Kyrkviken. There is always something going on during the summer months. Small boats from the islands around it adds to the port at the inn, gathered outside Konsum permanent residents and tourists to get a whiff of civilization before they return to their secluded paradise.

Långvik also has an op shop, in Ramsmora is a very good fish restaurant, Wikström, Berg is a classic camping near the dance floor and on the west coast are fine beaches.

If Mojab not welcome, it is nothing personal.

4. Utö

Utö in the Stockholm archipelago is a classic island for mining and military activities. Both are today and now it museiala Utö more about swimming, good food and good accommodation.

Gryvbyn on the northwest side is the place where it happens. Eat well and live well in Utö Inn or at one of the restaurants in the village. Buy the classic Utölimpan at the bakery. Rent a bike, look at old mines and other attractions, swimming off the rocks on the island's northeast side, or the fine sandy beach, further south. Enjoy the boats and the crowds in the harbor.

If you rent a motor boat on the marina and a round the island's northern tip (a short distance) will take you to a very fine outer skerries at Sadelöga. What better way to experience the most extreme of the archipelago, there might not.

5. Svartsö

Svartsö is a large island in the archipelago, so great that there are a few lakes on the island. With guest houses, restaurants, coffee shop and cafe is no need to sit on its hands at Svartsö. If it is not what you want of course.

The road going east-west direction over the island erbjduer long walks through the beautiful rural landscape. You are good with your own boat either at the pier at Ahlsvik guest, or in any of the natural harbors on the island's north side.
